Ryan Pascual
Age: 12
Rank: 2nd Degree Black Belt
When
Ryan was 4 years old, just
like most children, he watched cartoons and live action children’s
shows in the afternoon. One T.V. show in particular that caught
his eye was “Power Rangers,” a show was about a group
of costumed teenagers who fought bad guys using martial arts. The
dialog was cheesy but the show was full of action. Before long,
Ryan was acting out the kicks, punches and even the “hi-yah”
sounds from the show. His parents couldn’t help but take notice.
As a youngster, Ryan was full of energy. He hopped,
skipped, jumped, climbed and ran around all over the place. He practiced
his kicks on pillows and the family sofa. Ryan’s mom suggested
enrolling him at a nearby martial arts school as a way to release
some of that energy (and protect the furniture). Ryan’s father
wasn’t so sure about this idea at first. He felt his little
boy was too young and might not fully understand the teachings,
but reluctantly agreed to give it a try. Ryan was enrolled at Oriental
Moo-Do School a few days later.
The first week was emotionally difficult for both
parents and child. Ryan cried and did not want to be
left alone. After spending some time with Grandmaster Kim, Ryan
slowly accepted his new environment. He channeled his energy by
following the teachings of Master Kim. Mental toughness, respect
for others, confidence and physical conditioning were all gradually
instilled in young Ryan. He also benefited from the teachings of
Master Kim’s son, Olympic champion Jimmy Kim. In a few months,
the benefits of his martial arts training started appear to the
delight of his parents.
During
his 8 years of martial arts training, Ryan has competed in approximately
40 Tae Kwon Do tournaments and has won close to 40 gold medals.
He’s placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in three of the California State
tournaments and also competed in National Tae Kwon Do championships.
In school, he has received straight A’s on several occasions.
He excels in other sports he participates in, particularly in basketball.
His confidence and mental toughness are also evident in his everyday
activities.
His parents credit Ryan’s improved physical and mental development
to his martial arts training.
